The Rt. Revd. Dr. James B. Sellee (Bishop)
Episcopal Church of Liberia
Statement
Violence in all forms is cruel and uncivilized. All persons (women, men, boys, girls, rich or poor) are to be treated with dignity. Violence should have no place amongst us as humans. Our Lord Jesus Christ respects the dignity, equality, and worth of everyone.
“Then the LORD God said, It is not good for the man to live alone; I will make a suitable companion to help him.” — Genesis 2:18
This act of God in creating a suitable companion demonstrates God’s sense of gender balance and holistic platform for dialogue, decision-making, and gender parity. It shows God’s intention for a male and a female to work together as a team. Unfortunately, this is not the case in our global village. Women and girls are facing unwarranted abuses.
As a Faith-Based Organization (Episcopal Church of Liberia Relief & Development), we have been fighting against Gender-Based Violence for over 24 years. Our interventions are implemented in four counties (Rivercess, Bong, Grand Cape Mount, and Grand Gedeh), partnering with faith leaders and community members to address GBV. We also empower women through our Savings with Education initiative.
It is our hope, prayer, and anticipation that the Muslim and Christian Clerics, as well as the community members and traditional leaders, keep working together in protecting and safeguarding women and girls against all forms of violence.
Finally, the Episcopal Church of Liberia, through the Episcopal Church of Liberia Relief & Development, will continue to work with the Government of Liberia, in collaboration with the Ministries of Gender, Children and Social Protection, and Education, as well as other development partners, to address GBV and protect women and girls in Liberia.
